Pathologic changes in the subcortical white matter were noted as early as 1854 by Durand-Fardel, > He described (brain interstitial atrophy) on macroscopic examination of the brain.
Binswanger first suggested that white matter changes might be associated with disease symptoms. In 1894, he reported 8 patients with a complaints of dementia and having white matter lesions.
Alzheimer in 1902 provided histological confirmation.
